Interior Design Trends I see

Sunday, September 4th, 2011 by susanz

On a recent visit to Italy I was struck by the counter balance of old versus new. In Milan the stunning newly restored Duomo at Piazza del Duomo was balanced by the newly opened Museo del Novecento, or Museum of the 20th Century. A fabulous museum it set the tone for the rest of our trip. Seemingly everywhere I looked I saw sleek balanced by soft, dark balanced by light and old balanced by new. Our last night in Milan we stayed near the airport in a lovely small hotel called First Hotel where I saw this incredible chandilier.

First Hotel lobby chandilie

First Hotel lobby chandilier

It was so beaufiful made from Murano glass in the old world style, except the artist paired this traditional glass with open sleek design and structural elements of Polished Chrome. The piece was large but felt light and airy.  It was more than just a light fixture it was a sculpture in a very modern lobby in modern colors but it was not trite because those modern elements were so perfectly balanced by traditional glass. I think there is something we can take from this chandilier in our design tastes. Contemporary design is wonderful but overdone it can become industrial and cold…not the way I would want someone to feel in my home. Perhaps we need to rethink and reinterpret some of the older style design elemnts and realize they do not need to be discarded…they can be used and balanced quite beautifully wth the new.

Decorating with dots

Thursday, May 20th, 2010 by susanz

I was enjoying the recent Garnet Hill Catalog and thinking how cute all the polka dot sheets would

look in a children’s or teen’s room design.  Bright white background with jewel and primary toned

dots!  How cute is that?  Add basic white furniture pieces and replace the plain knobs with  our

Mushroom Cabinet Knobs that look like dots and your room is already Nifty!   Take it a step further

as many paint and wallpaper companies make covering your walls with dots a breeze.  Check

out this link for fun ideas.  http://www.unique-baby-gear-ideas.com/painting-polka-dots.html

Dots, dots and more dots.  Dotted bedding,  knobs for children that look like dots, and dots on your

walls!  How  Nifty is that?

New Kitchen Trends-3 Movies to watch

Saturday, May 15th, 2010 by susanz

Did you notice the kitchens in three of the movies receiving nominations for Oscars  this year?  Namely,  Julie and Julia (Meryl Streep),  It’s Complicated (Meryl Streep) and  The Blind Side (Sandra Bullock) .  All three kitchens were warm and homey.  The kitchens looked used and they were beautiful.  IMHO I prefer this style.  I was druling over all three.  Rooms like these make you want to sit down and eat or in the case of at least two of the movies cook!  Perhaps we have finally, thanks to Hollywood, turned a corner and have returned to the kitchen as it was meant to be.  In days past the kitchen was called the Hearth Room after the hearth of the fire pit where the cooking took place.  Often in the middle of the home so the warmth from the hearth could also heat other rooms it was literally the warmest place in the home and in more ways than one it was truly the center of the home.   To me an intensly modern kitchen is not a working kitchen and I so enjoyed watching these movies and the spirit of the kitchen in each.   How do you view the home kitchen?  Share with us ways you make your kitchen you!

A new twist on green products

Friday, April 23rd, 2010 by susanz

Earth day was yesterday and it got me thinking about our environment.   We hear so much in our industry about recycling materials when remodeling and using products made from recycled products.  But there is little talk about  products that last a long time.  In other words for the past many years we have become a throw away society.  We own 5 sweaters when we can only wear one at a time.  We use a product for a while, even if it is made of recycled materials, shortly tire of it and the item winds up in the dumpster when our tastes change.

When I designed our Convert>able Bath Accessory Collection I thought the idea of being able to change the towel bar to suit the tastes of individual customers was a good idea.  Frankly the design had a great unintended consequence;  you never need to tire of this patented collection.  When your style changes, with the addition of a knob or two the bath accessories can change with you.  The towel bar for the kid’s bathroom  later can move to the laundry room, or pool house or even the kitchen.

Another unintended consequence is the ease of installation.  Many towel bars wiggle and the cover plates fall off the wall.  We call our handyman over and over again to fix them.  But our patented design eliminates this problem all together.  Your handyman need only visit your job one time.  Once installed these bath accessories never move and your handyman does not need to return to the job over and over again.

So my conclusion, if we think of green also as efficiency namely our use of time  gas and expense…a well designed product can be installed easily and efficiently, eliminating return trips and lasts through many changes in home decor.

Now that’s green and that’s Nifty!

Convert>able Bath Accessories

Friday, March 12th, 2010 by susanz

There are times (historic moments) in every industry when a new twist (innovation) on a familiar product forever changes both the product and the industry. In case you haven’t heard, that time has arrived for towel bars. The industry is now seeking to regain its footing after the ingenious design produced by Nifty Nob. Thanks to Nifty Nob, towel bars have never been easier to install! With no clips or set screws, the Convert>able towel bars install in just three incredibly easy steps. First you mark the location on your wall through the pre-drilled holes, then you mount your flange and finally snuggly screw down the plate. That’s it!  But that’s not all! The innovative Convert>able design holds your bar in place through heavy wet towel after towel. Once you install it, you will never have to touch your towel bar again. Move on over you straight and narrow, hard to install, easy to un-install just by pulling down on them, run-of-the-mill towel bars!

Make room for the styling bath accessory line from Nifty Nob . . . the Convert>ables. With one turn of a nob, the bath accessory industry has been turned on its head. Never before has such a sensible and economical design been available. Re-doing your bathroom YOUR way has never been easier or more affordable. Think a towel bar is a towel bar is a towel bar? It’s easy to do if you go to any major outlet store, where a small number of brand names produce slight variations on the same old theme. You can choose between polished chrome, satin nickel, oil rubbed bronze and brass, but customizing the bar to match your color scheme or kid’s favorite animal or hobby? It’s not even on the menu.

Well, you haven’t been visiting the right bath house. Check out www.niftynob.com and their new line of Convert>ables. The post hardware is designed so that the knobs can be swapped out with any Nifty Nob or standard threaded knob, allowing you endless variations in your bathroom décor without ever changing the actual towel bar.

With their keen eye for detail, utility and value, Nifty Nob’s Convert>ables Collection has made a unique and valuable contribution to the industry and erased many of the issues that have made towel bar installation an unpleasant chore. This patented, superior quality product line is only available online at www.niftynob.com. Bar Pulls

Sunday, January 24th, 2010 by susanz

Ok, I have to say it. Is anyone besides me over stainless steel bar pulls?  They are starting to remind me of the white T-shirt and  khaki’s uniform of the 80’s. Done, done and overdone. It seems every design magazine out there is showing this look and this look only.  Please there are many  other interesting hardware designs out there…can I say Nifty?   And if you MUST have bar pulls at least mix with some interesting knobs!  What is your opinion?  Are these that loved or is it just the easy solution like the white t-shirt and Khaki’s?
