A tribute to my Dad!

June 20th, 2010 by susanz

Nifty Nob would not be here if it were not for my Dad.  No he did not finance this venture it is the voice in my head that I am talking about.   My dear Dad passed from Alzheimers on Christmas Eve 2007.  Even when he was the most remote he gave me great practial advice.  When I was a young woman working for Macy’s New York in my early 20’s I was convinced I had hit a glass ceiling.  I remember complaining to him on the phone 3000 miles away.  He said quite firmly “Don’t you let the fact that you are a woman hold you back from anything!”  And I have never forgotten it.  When times are hardest I remember him believing in me…always being surprised when I did something he did not understand…let’s just say he was not an artist!   He was a liberated man long before it was fashionable, he taught me to read the stock lisings in the Wall Street Journal when I was 14…For the younger set that is how we tracked our investments before the likes of online trading companies and the internet.     There was just no grey area with my Dad, you were good or bad, successful or not and excuses were not tolerated.  They were good lessons to learn.  It makes the tough decisions in business easier when you were given such clear guidelines as a child paired with the absolute belief  that anything is possible!  I miss him!

June 15th, 2010 by susanz

I had the opportunity to visit a Pottery Barn Kids while visiting North Carolina recently.

Primrose Knob are just a few.   Kids cabinet hardware does not have to be made of plastic…afterall

when you are spending hundreds of dollars on unique bedding and room design why skimp when

Decorating with dots

May 20th, 2010 by susanz

I was enjoying the recent Garnet Hill Catalog and thinking how cute all the polka dot sheets would

look in a children’s or teen’s room design.  Bright white background with jewel and primary toned

dots!  How cute is that?  Add basic white furniture pieces and replace the plain knobs with  our

Mushroom Cabinet Knobs that look like dots and your room is already Nifty!   Take it a step further

as many paint and wallpaper companies make covering your walls with dots a breeze.  Check

out this link for fun ideas.  http://www.unique-baby-gear-ideas.com/painting-polka-dots.html

Dots, dots and more dots.  Dotted bedding,  knobs for children that look like dots, and dots on your

walls!  How  Nifty is that?

New Kitchen Trends-3 Movies to watch

May 15th, 2010 by susanz

Did you notice the kitchens in three of the movies receiving nominations for Oscars  this year?  Namely,  Julie and Julia (Meryl Streep),  It’s Complicated (Meryl Streep) and  The Blind Side (Sandra Bullock) .  All three kitchens were warm and homey.  The kitchens looked used and they were beautiful.  IMHO I prefer this style.  I was druling over all three.  Rooms like these make you want to sit down and eat or in the case of at least two of the movies cook!  Perhaps we have finally, thanks to Hollywood, turned a corner and have returned to the kitchen as it was meant to be.  In days past the kitchen was called the Hearth Room after the hearth of the fire pit where the cooking took place.  Often in the middle of the home so the warmth from the hearth could also heat other rooms it was literally the warmest place in the home and in more ways than one it was truly the center of the home.   To me an intensly modern kitchen is not a working kitchen and I so enjoyed watching these movies and the spirit of the kitchen in each.   How do you view the home kitchen?  Share with us ways you make your kitchen you!

A new twist on green products

April 23rd, 2010 by susanz

Earth day was yesterday and it got me thinking about our environment.   We hear so much in our industry about recycling materials when remodeling and using products made from recycled products.  But there is little talk about  products that last a long time.  In other words for the past many years we have become a throw away society.  We own 5 sweaters when we can only wear one at a time.  We use a product for a while, even if it is made of recycled materials, shortly tire of it and the item winds up in the dumpster when our tastes change.

When I designed our Convert>able Bath Accessory Collection I thought the idea of being able to change the towel bar to suit the tastes of individual customers was a good idea.  Frankly the design had a great unintended consequence;  you never need to tire of this patented collection.  When your style changes, with the addition of a knob or two the bath accessories can change with you.  The towel bar for the kid’s bathroom  later can move to the laundry room, or pool house or even the kitchen.

Another unintended consequence is the ease of installation.  Many towel bars wiggle and the cover plates fall off the wall.  We call our handyman over and over again to fix them.  But our patented design eliminates this problem all together.  Your handyman need only visit your job one time.  Once installed these bath accessories never move and your handyman does not need to return to the job over and over again.

So my conclusion, if we think of green also as efficiency namely our use of time  gas and expense…a well designed product can be installed easily and efficiently, eliminating return trips and lasts through many changes in home decor.

Now that’s green and that’s Nifty!

The things we take for granted.

April 14th, 2010 by susanz

It is amazing the things we take for granted these days, such as towel bars. You find them everywhere to hold your beautiful towels that descended from the highly prized Turkish towel.  It often seems that where you want a towel bar is exactly where it is the most difficult to install. Finding the wall studs should be the least of your worries, but in most cases you end up tackling an array of issues just trying to attach the towel bar to the brackets. Only to end up with it coming off the wall and in some cases damaging your walls.

With the Convert>able bath accessories we give you the ability to value your towels and your walls by providing a revolutionary “Nifty mounting system” that makes towel bar installation a breeze.  Once you have attached the bracket, it is two easy steps to a secure the towel bar. Then you are ready to put your decorating talents to work with our array of beautiful custom designed knobs. Match to towels, tiles or wall color.

The towel would still be a drab piece of fabric if the Ottomans of the 17th century had not intervened. They brought style, design and magnificent weaving to the development of the modern towels with the help of their well-honed carpet weaving skills in the 17th century. Don’t let your towel bar be just a towel bar. Visit Nifty Nob® today, watch our You Tube video about this exciting product and transform your home in same way the towel was transformed by the Ottomans.

Obsidian Designer Knobs

April 7th, 2010 by susanz

Obsidian is a unique and highly prized material with many attributes. These qualities are why we chose the name Obsidian Black for the black knobs and accessories in our Decorative Designer Series line. In the business of knobs and accessories, the term ‘Decorative Designer’ refers to pieces that like Obsidian are special, unique, and very high in quality. They are made artistically from the best materials; they are the “Over the top” special touch, the unique accent that magnify the beauty in your kitchen or bathroom. The knobs and accessories in this series, which come in a sparkling array of colors including Obsidian Black, simultaneously transcend and enhance the unique architecture of your home. In the same way that a beautiful stone set in an elegant ring enhances the stone, the ring and the hand that wears it, the presence of the knobs and accessories in the Decorative Designer series in your home enhance not just the item it adorns, but also the room and the house in which it lives.

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass, which has been highly prized by people throughout the world for millennia. The importance of Obsidian in Mesoamerican societies has been compared to the value and importance of steel in modern civilization. The unique brilliancy of Obsidian is unmatched. Black is the most commonly known color of Obsidian though it can also be found in a variety of colors. All Obsidian is translucent in nature and possesses the property of changing color according to the manner in which it is cut. It can be cut to exquisite thinness and maintain its dynamic sharpness. The natural sharpness of an Obsidian blade is why it has been used to make arrowheads and tools for centuries and is used today to make modern tools including scalpels.

Just as Obsidian is known and sought after for its uncommon sharpness and utility, so are all Nifty Nob® products. Using only expert craftsmanship and high quality materials, Nifty Nob has been in the business of making uncommonly beautiful knobs and accessories for over seventeen years. Give your home the gift of uncommon sharpness and appeal; give your home Nifty Nobs.  To give your home a high quality look and elegant feel without breaking your bank, look no further than Nifty Nob, online at www.Niftynob.com.
